Pediatrics Q & A

What is pediatric care?

A doctor of pediatric care manages the physical, behavioral, and developmental health of a growing child. They complete specialized training to diagnose and treat illnesses affecting children.

During a pediatric appointment, Dr. Azubuike may perform a physical exam, administer vaccinations, or track your child’s growth and development. The team answers any questions you might have and gives you information about how you can promote your child’s health.

In general, babies need pediatric checkups two weeks after birth, at two months, four months, six months, nine months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months, and at 36 months. After 36 months, it is recommended to visit the doctor annually for well child checks.

What immunizations does my child need?

Immunizations help protect your child from preventable illnesses and diseases, both in childhood and throughout life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a series of vaccinations for all children based on their age.

As children grow, their immune systems develop. Dr. Azubuike offers vaccinations based on the CDC guidelines, ensuring maximum effectiveness for all immunizations. Some immunizations require several consecutive doses, depending on the type.

Dr. Azubuike and the team work with you to help you determine what immunizations your child needs. When you visit Mercy Family Clinic for the first time, bring your child’s immunization records with you to the appointment.

When should I take my child to the pediatrician?

Regular wellness checks based on your child’s age, mark developmental and growth milestones. In addition to these checkups, you learn when illness necessitates a visit to the doctor to keep your child as healthy as they grow.

Take your child to the doctor if they’re younger than three months old, and they have a rectal temperature at or above 100.4°F. For older kids, visit the doctor if their temperature rises above 102.2°F. If you notice changes in your child’s behavior at any time, make an appointment.

Pediatric care at Mercy Family health goes beyond yearly checkups and acute illness. Most children need immunizations for daycare and school, and kids that play sports often need sports physicals to ensure they’re healthy enough to participate.
